A quarterback wouldn't think of making a play without looking down the field – do you?
In initial planning stages the long term view is frequently overshadowed or left out of the discussion entirely.
This can happen for various reasons: the potential life of the effort is unknown; the time frame with which to prepare before launching is abbreviated; goals beyond immediate are yet to be determined.
It’s not new. My mom used to reference it all the time growing up as she advised us about who we became friends with, “birds of a feather…” It’s the same online only without geographic barriers, like-minded people gather together.
Growing up I remember references my dad made to the pitfalls of becoming a know-it-all professionally. He was forced to reinvented himself a few times in order to adapt to changing faces of the industries within which he worked - agriculture, real estate, insurance.
He always managed to come out on top and one of the reasons why is because he was always open to learning – learning a new skill set, a new industry, a new approach.
When it comes to developing a social media plan, I advise taking the turtle approach. Many companies and organizations are hustling to set up profiles, accounts and pages on various social networks.
The best approach is to take your time, take a step back and approach it like you would any sustained effort for the entity. There are many new wonderful and exciting new tools in social media and social networking.
