Awkward socnet situations

Some of the awkward social rules in life translate to the conversation online. Take the stop and chat, Larry David on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm demonstrated this awkward situation in a gifted way that made us all feel his pain - when you see someone you know on the street or a public place what is expected? Hello is usually not enough, you have to stop and catch up, but what if you are in a hurry if you don't stop you're likely to feel the pain later. Not to mention the physicality of social encounters - do we hug, handshake, double handshake, cheek kiss?

One of my most dreaded is the airplane passenger chat. You know that if you engage at all from the moment you sit, that is a conversation that may last for the entire 2-hour flight. Not that I am an antisocial person, but I am typically traveling for work and have work to do on the flight or at the end of a trip full of meetings I'm in need of down time to read. So, I'm not proud to say, I have put up the invisible chamber around myself avoided eye contact and done everything in my power to look engrossed in something - work, a book, the thoughtful gaze out the window, or play opossum.

Now we have awkward socnet situations that are bound to leave an emotional mark, here are a few:

  1. Friend request from someone you sort of knew in school or at a previous job, but not really.
  2. Friend request to someone you have worked with who doesn't friend you back then shows up again in your suggestions - that's a big matzo ball.
  3. The invitation to join a cause you don't support or to play a game you have no interest in.
  4. Unfriending, blocking or restricting access to areas of your profile.
  5. Comments mistyped in a way that could be completely misinterpreted - the cat's, reeeeear, out of the bag! Even if you delete the post, the message was already emailed to those in the conversation and there's no way to delete that.

At least online it doesn't matter if you are under-dressed or over-dressed for an event...that is until people start utilizing video more for interacting virtually. There are many more, post comments if you have others to add.
