Overcommitted

There are oodles of social media tools within which to create a profile, a page, a group, an identity. It's completely addictive once you get into it and have a comfort level with your friends, followers and fans. This makes it really easy to find yourself trying to be in many places at once keeping up with different conversations.

I'm always saying - to myself and others - do online what you would do offline. When I find myself over committing, because I much prefer to say yes over no, I review, rethink and prioritize. We can only do one - or maybe more accurately today a few - things at a time. (Caution: avoid texting and driving please! :))

I have a list of the communities and social media sites in order of which will get the majority of my time based on what my goals are for engaging in the communities. A couple are listed more than once if my interaction on the site is multi-purpose, but the priority is different. For example, I'm on Facebook for both personal and professional reasons and on Twitter I engage on behalf of more than one client, for charitable causes, personal interests and for my own business.

After you prioritize, give yourself a break. It's ok to let your mobile phone, your computer and yourself shut down once in a while - this time of year is a great time for that! 24/7 connection is not necessary and you'll come back to it with fresh eyes and ears.
